A painter in Saudi Arabia earns between SAR 1,600 and SAR 2,700 a month once he is properly skilled. A helper starts lower, around SAR 1,200 to SAR 1,600. Those are the numbers that appear on real job adverts posted by real contractors in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam — not the SAR 6,000 and SAR 8,000 “averages” you will find on salary-comparison websites.
That gap matters, so it is worth explaining before anything else. Those aggregator sites blend office salaries and Western expatriate packages into the same average as site labour. The result is a number no painter has ever been offered. This guide uses advertised figures only, and tells you plainly where the data is thin.
The second thing worth knowing early: painting is one of the trades that is still fully open to expatriate workers. Saudi Arabia’s 2026 Saudization decisions have closed a long list of jobs to non-Saudis — security guards, receptionists, storekeepers, call-centre agents, sales staff, 69 administrative roles in total. Manual trades are not the target. If you hold an iqama with a painting profession on it, your job is not on any localisation list.
The third thing is the one that actually catches people out, and almost nobody writes about it: the Skill Verification Programme. Painting is one of the trades on it. This is a practical trade test, and it now has an in-country track for workers already employed in the Kingdom.
This guide is written for people already living in Saudi Arabia — on an iqama, or as a Saudi national. It covers what the work pays, what the summer heat rules mean for your hours, how to change employer legally, and what to check before you sign anything.

Ask these four questions before you accept any painting job.
1. Is the quoted salary basic, or does it include allowances? 2. Is accommodation provided, or is there a housing allowance? 3. Is transport to site provided? 4. What is the overtime rate and is it paid monthly? A contractor who will not answer these clearly in writing is telling you something.

Industry Overview
Painting in Saudi Arabia is not one job. It is three separate markets that happen to share a job title, and they pay differently, hire differently and demand different skills.
Construction and finishing
The largest employer of painters. New towers, villas, compounds, hospitals, schools, hotels. You work for a finishing subcontractor, usually on a project that has a completion date, and you move to the next site when it ends. Pay is middling, hours are long, and accommodation is normally in a labour camp.
Industrial and protective coating
The best-paid painting work in the Kingdom, and the least understood. Steel structures, pipelines, storage tanks, refineries and petrochemical plants need protective coating systems applied to a specification, with dry-film thickness measured and signed off. This is a technical trade. Aramco and SABIC contractors run it, and they pay accordingly.
Facility management and maintenance
Compounds, malls, hotels, hospitals and government buildings employ painters permanently to keep the place presentable. The work is steadier, the hours are more predictable, the accommodation is often better, and you are not chasing project ends. Pay sits between the other two.
Why this matters to your salary
A painter who can only roll emulsion on a villa wall is competing with thousands of others. A painter who can prepare steel, read a coating specification and use a spray gun properly is in a much smaller group. That difference is worth more than a thousand riyals a month, and it is learnable.
Current Demand in 2026
Demand for finishing trades is real, but the map has changed significantly in the last eighteen months, and most articles on this subject are badly out of date.
What actually changed
You will still find websites promising a NEOM hiring boom. That picture is no longer accurate. Work on The Line has been halted until after 2030 while the design is reworked to cut cost, Trojena has been pushed past 2030, and the project is carrying a very large contract-cancellation bill. Oxagon, the hydrogen plant and the data centres continue — the rest has slowed sharply.
Where the work actually is
| Location | What is driving it | Outlook for finishing trades |
|---|---|---|
| Diriyah, Riyadh | The strongest live pipeline in the Kingdom — tens of billions still to be awarded | Very strong through 2027–2030 |
| Expo 2030 site, Riyadh | Earthworks done, buildings starting. Peak workforce projected 50,000–70,000 | Ramping now |
| King Salman International Airport | New terminal construction begins 2026, operations 2029 | Biggest single new site of 2026 |
| Qiddiya | Delivering — attractions opening | Steady |
| Red Sea and Amaala | Shifting from construction to hotel operations | Site work declining, FM painting rising |
| Jubail and Yanbu | Industrial maintenance, refinery shutdowns | Steady and best paid |
| NEOM | Only Oxagon, hydrogen and data centres | Reduced — do not plan around it |
Who can legally take these jobs
| Your status | Can you work as a painter? |
|---|---|
| Saudi national | Yes, unrestricted |
| Expat with a valid iqama and matching profession | Yes |
| Expat whose iqama says a different profession | Legally you should change the profession first — see below |
| Dependent iqama holder | No, until the status is converted to a work permit |
| Visit visa holder | No. Working on a visit visa is illegal |
The profession on your iqama matters more than most workers realise. It decides your work-permit skill classification, whether a quota covers your role, and whether you can legally do the job you are actually doing. Inspectors reference the registered profession, not what you do on site. If your iqama says something unrelated, ask your employer to process a profession change — the fee is legally the employer’s under Article 40.
Job Roles
“Painter” covers a wide range of work in Saudi Arabia. Knowing which one you are applying for changes both the interview and the salary.
| Role | What you do | Typical monthly pay |
|---|---|---|
| Painter Helper | Sanding, masking, mixing, carrying, cleaning tools | SAR 1,200 – 1,600 |
| General Painter | Surface preparation, primer, emulsion, brush and roller finishing | SAR 1,600 – 2,200 |
| Skilled / Finishing Painter | Putty and skim work, straight lines, spray finishing, high-gloss | SAR 2,000 – 2,700 |
| Spray Painter | Airless and conventional spray, doors, joinery, ceilings at volume | SAR 2,200 – 3,000 |
| Industrial / Protective Coating Painter | Blasting, epoxy and polyurethane systems, film thickness to spec | SAR 2,500 – 4,000 |
| Decorative Specialist | Textures, stucco, marble effect, wallpaper, gypsum finishing | SAR 2,500 – 4,000 |
| Painting Foreman | Running a gang, measuring work, material control, quality | SAR 2,500 – 3,500 |
| Painting Supervisor / QC | Inspection, snagging, client handover, coating reports | SAR 3,500 – 6,000 |
Ranges reflect advertised basic salaries. Industrial and supervisory figures are based on a thinner sample and should be treated as indicative.
The two roles worth aiming at
Spray painter. The single fastest pay increase available to a general painter. Spray work is faster, cleaner and priced higher, and the skill is learnable on site if you ask to be trained. Many painters never ask.
Industrial coating. Longer to reach, but it takes you out of the villa-finishing market entirely and into the oil, gas and petrochemical supply chain, where the pay structure is different and the contracts are longer.
Daily Responsibilities
What the day actually looks like, so you can judge the job before you take it.
A normal site day outside summer
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 05:30 | Wake in the camp, breakfast |
| 06:30 | Company bus to site |
| 07:00 | Toolbox talk — safety briefing, work allocation |
| 07:15 | Masking, sheeting, surface preparation. Preparation is most of the job |
| 10:00 | Short break |
| 12:00 | Lunch and prayer |
| 13:00 | Application — primer, first coat, second coat depending on the programme |
| 16:00 | Clean tools, cover materials, record what was completed |
| 16:30 | Bus back. Overtime often continues to 18:00 or 19:00 |
Summer is a different job
From 15 June to 15 September, all outdoor work in direct sunlight is prohibited between 12:00 and 15:00 across the private sector. This is enforced, and the penalty is SAR 3,000 per worker — multiplied by how many workers are found in breach.
In practice this means the day splits: roughly 05:00 to 11:30, then 15:30 to around 19:00. It is a long day with a gap in the middle, and it is the reason many painters find summer harder than the heat alone would suggest. Indoor finishing work continues normally.
If a supervisor asks you to work outdoors during the ban, the employer is the one breaking the law, and the violation can be reported on 19911.
The parts people underestimate
- Preparation is 70% of the work. Sanding, filling, masking and cleaning take far longer than applying paint
- Height work. Scaffolding, ladders and mobile towers are routine. Fall protection training is standard on large projects
- Solvent exposure. Industrial coatings require respirators, not dust masks. Insist on the correct equipment
- Rework. A snag list at handover can send you back over work you finished weeks ago
- Dust. In Riyadh and the Eastern Province, a sandstorm can ruin a wet coat and cost you the day
Required Skills
Contractors hire painters on evidence of finish quality and reliability. Very little else moves the decision.
| Skill | Why it matters | How to show it |
|---|---|---|
| Surface preparation | Every coating failure traces back to preparation | Explain your process step by step in the interview |
| Clean edges and straight lines | This is what a client inspects first | Photographs of your own finished work |
| Spray gun operation | Doubles output and pays more | Name the equipment you have used |
| Putty, skim and gypsum finishing | Common requirement in Saudi villa and tower work | Mention it explicitly — many painters cannot do it |
| Reading a coating specification | Essential for industrial work | Any refinery or steel structure experience |
| Safety discipline | Large contractors dismiss for breaches | Any safety card or induction record you hold |
| Basic English or Arabic | Safety briefings and instructions | Enough to follow and confirm instructions |
| Reliability | The single most valued trait on a site | Long stays with previous employers |
Keep a photo record
This is the cheapest career advice in this guide and almost nobody follows it. Photograph your finished work — a clean edge, a sprayed door, a completed wall, a tank coating. A painter who opens his phone and shows twenty photographs of his own finishing will out-interview a painter with ten years of experience and nothing to show.
Education Requirements
There is no educational requirement to work as a painter in Saudi Arabia. No diploma, no certificate, no minimum schooling. Ability and iqama status are what matter.
| Role | Education expected | Strict? |
|---|---|---|
| Helper | None | No |
| General and skilled painter | None — trade ability only | No |
| Industrial coating painter | None, but coating training strongly preferred | Training matters, schooling does not |
| Foreman | None. Experience and the ability to run a team | No |
| Painting supervisor / QC inspector | Technical diploma helps; coating inspection certification matters more | Certification yes, degree no |
If you hold a trade certificate from your home country, keep the original and a clear copy. It will not usually be asked for, but it is useful evidence if you are ever asked to sit a skill test.
Professional Certifications and the Skill Test
This is the section most guides leave out, and it is the one that can decide whether your work permit renews smoothly.
The Skill Verification Programme
Saudi Arabia runs a Skill Verification Programme through the Ministry of Human Resources with the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation. It is a practical trade test designed to confirm that a worker registered in a skilled profession can actually do that work.
Key points:
- Painting is one of the listed trades, alongside electrical, plumbing, welding, carpentry, air-conditioning and vehicle mechanics
- The programme covers over a thousand professions and has been extended to 160 countries
- There are two tracks: testing in the worker’s home country before arrival, and — importantly — in-country testing at certified centres for workers already employed in Saudi Arabia
- The test format is typically a short theory section on safety and regulations, followed by a practical assessment of ninety minutes to two hours
- Registration is through the programme’s portal, svp.qiwa.sa
An honest caveat. It is widely reported that the certificate is increasingly checked at iqama and work-permit renewal through Qiwa. That is plausible and consistent with how the system is being tightened, but it is not something we can confirm from an official published rule. Check your own status on svp.qiwa.sa rather than relying on any website, including this one.
Other certifications worth holding
| Certification | Who needs it | Who pays |
|---|---|---|
| Site safety induction | Everyone on a large project | Employer |
| Working at height / scaffolding user | Anyone on scaffold or ladders | Employer |
| Confined space entry | Tank and vessel coating work | Employer |
| OSHA 30 or IOSH | Foremen and supervisors on major contracts | Usually employer |
| Coating inspection certification | QC inspectors — a genuine career jump | Often self-funded, high return |
Be careful with paid “certificates”. Legitimate site certifications come through your employer or an accredited training body. Anyone selling you a guaranteed Saudi painting certificate for a fee, particularly through social media, is selling something no contractor asked for.
Training Programs
Painting is learned on the job in Saudi Arabia. There is no apprenticeship system for expatriate trades, and no licence to obtain. What exists are three practical routes to becoming worth more.
Route 1: On-site progression
Start as a helper, watch the skilled painters, and ask for the work nobody wants — the ceiling, the difficult edge, the spray job. Foremen notice who volunteers. Most painters who reached SAR 2,700 got there this way, not through a course.
Route 2: Employer-funded technical training
Large contractors and facility management companies train their own people, because a painter who can spray and read a specification is more useful to them. Ask directly. The worst outcome is being told no, and the request itself marks you as someone who wants to progress.
Route 3: Paint manufacturer training
The major coating manufacturers operating in the Kingdom run applicator training on their own products and systems. Contractors are often invited to send staff. This is genuinely valuable training, it is free to the worker, and very few painters ever ask their supervisor whether the company has been offered places.
For Saudi nationals
Saudi citizens have access to a completely separate system that expatriates cannot use: TVTC vocational colleges, the Jadarat employment platform, and Human Resources Development Fund subsidy programmes that pay employers a share of a Saudi employee’s salary. If you are a Saudi national reading this, those routes are worth investigating before taking a direct-hire role.
Salary Guide 2026
Read this section carefully, because painter salary information online is unusually unreliable.
Why published averages are wrong
Salary aggregator sites report Saudi painter salaries of SAR 5,000 to SAR 9,000 a month. Live job adverts from contractors advertise SAR 1,500 to SAR 2,700. The aggregators are not lying — they are modelling, and their models blend office and expatriate-package salaries into trade averages. For blue-collar Saudi roles, they overstate by anywhere from 50% to 150%.
Everything below is anchored to advertised figures.
| Level | Basic monthly (SAR) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Helper / assistant | 1,200 – 1,600 | Typical entry point with no trade experience |
| General painter | 1,600 – 2,200 | The largest group |
| Skilled / finishing painter | 2,000 – 2,700 | Putty, spray, quality finishing |
| Industrial coating painter | 2,500 – 4,000 | Best-paid application work |
| Foreman | 2,500 – 3,500 | Running a gang |
| Supervisor / QC | 3,500 – 6,000 | Thinner data — treat as indicative |
What is on top of basic
The advertised number is rarely what you receive. Package elements typically include:
| Element | Typical treatment |
|---|---|
| Accommodation | Provided in camp, or SAR 300–600 allowance |
| Transport to site | Company bus, or SAR 200–400 allowance |
| Food | Sometimes provided; otherwise your own cost |
| Overtime | Hourly wage + 50% of basic — often the largest single addition |
| Medical insurance | Employer must provide it |
| Annual ticket home | Common, usually once every one or two years |
| End of service | Paid on leaving — see below |
The Article 61 point worth knowing: since the 2025 Labour Law amendments, the employer must provide housing and transport, or a cash allowance in lieu, and this must be addressed in the contract. If your contract is silent on both, that is a question to ask before signing.
Overtime is where the money is
Overtime is paid at your hourly wage plus 50% of basic. On a SAR 2,000 basic with sixty overtime hours in a month, that is a meaningful addition — often SAR 500 to SAR 900. Two painters on identical basic salaries can take home very different amounts depending on how much overtime their project runs.
Note that housing and transport allowances are excluded from the overtime calculation unless your contract says otherwise.
End of service benefit
This is money you are owed, and many workers do not know how it is calculated.
| Service | Entitlement |
|---|---|
| First five years | Half a month’s wage per year |
| Each year after five | One full month’s wage per year |
| If you resign under 2 years | Nothing |
| Resign at 2–5 years | One third of the award |
| Resign at 5–10 years | Two thirds |
| Resign at 10+ years | Full award |
| If the employer terminates you | Full award regardless of length of service |
It is calculated on your last wage, including due allowances — not on basic alone. Entitlements should be settled within one week of the relationship ending.
Employee Benefits and Legal Rights
A short, practical summary of what the law gives you. These are not optional extras.
| Right | The rule |
|---|---|
| Working hours | 8 hours a day, 48 a week. Ramadan 6 a day, 36 a week for Muslim workers |
| Breaks | At least 30 minutes after a maximum of 5 consecutive hours. No more than 11 hours total at the workplace |
| Weekly rest | Friday, on full pay, at least 24 consecutive hours. One day is the legal minimum — a two-day weekend is contractual, not statutory |
| Annual leave | At least 21 days, rising to at least 30 after five continuous years |
| Sick leave | 30 days full pay, next 60 at three quarters, next 30 unpaid |
| Hajj leave | 10–15 days paid, once, after two years’ service |
| Medical insurance | Employer must provide |
| Iqama and work permit costs | Employer pays — Article 40 |
| Deductions from wages | Capped at 50% of your wage |
| Passport | Your employer has no right to keep it |
Your contract
Contracts for non-Saudi workers must be written and fixed-term. Two details are worth knowing. First, Arabic is the governing language — a bilingual contract is fine, but the Arabic text prevails even if the English version says otherwise. Second, your contract must be documented on Qiwa, and you can view, approve, reject or request changes to it in your own Qiwa account. A contract that has never appeared in your Qiwa account is a genuine problem, not an administrative detail.
If your wages are late
Saudi Arabia runs a Wage Protection System covering all private-sector employers, and enforcement tightened considerably in late 2025. The wage clause in a documented Qiwa contract is now directly enforceable — where wages go wholly unpaid for thirty days or more, the process can lead to funds being withdrawn from the employer’s account without a court case.
The escalation route is: raise it internally, then file for Friendly Settlement through the Ministry — this is free, must be filed within twelve months, and runs to a twenty-one working day timetable. There is a helpline on 19911 with support in English, Hindi, Urdu, Malayalam and Bengali.
Changing employer
You can normally transfer to a new employer with your current employer’s consent from day one, or without consent after twelve months. You may also transfer without consent regardless of how long you have been there in four situations:
- You have no documented employment contract in Qiwa
- Your wages have gone unpaid for three consecutive months
- Your work permit was not issued within ninety days of your arrival
- Your work permit or iqama has expired
One practical point that catches people out: the new employer’s company must also qualify — its Nitaqat band, wage-protection compliance and contract documentation all have to meet thresholds. Most failed transfers fail on the receiving company, not on the worker. The Ministry states the transfer service itself is free.
Career Progression
Painting has a real ladder in Saudi Arabia, but it is climbed by adding skills rather than by waiting for time to pass.
| Stage | Role | Time to reach | Pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Helper | Entry | 1,200 – 1,600 |
| 2 | General painter | 6–18 months | 1,600 – 2,200 |
| 3 | Skilled / spray painter | 2–4 years | 2,000 – 3,000 |
| 4 | Industrial coating painter | 3–6 years | 2,500 – 4,000 |
| 5 | Foreman | 4–8 years | 2,500 – 3,500 |
| 6 | Supervisor / QC inspector | 7–12 years | 3,500 – 6,000 |
The three moves that actually raise your pay
- Learn to spray. The quickest jump available, and it can be learned on site within months if you ask
- Move into industrial coating. Different market, different pay structure, longer contracts
- Get a coating inspection qualification. This takes you from applying coatings to inspecting and signing off other people’s — a different career with a different ceiling
Where painting leads outside painting
- Facility management supervision — running maintenance teams across a compound or mall
- Finishing subcontracting — running your own gang under a main contractor, which requires proper commercial registration and sponsorship arrangements
- Paint sales and technical support — manufacturers hire experienced applicators to advise contractors
- QA/QC — the highest-paid route out of the trade
Top Employers
Painters are hired mostly by subcontractors and facility management companies, not by the giga-project developers directly. Applying to the developer is the most common wasted application.
| Employer type | Examples of who they are | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Main contractors | El Seif, Nesma & Partners, Al Bawani, Almabani, Saudi Binladin Group, Al Yamama | Large projects, structured HR, reliable payroll |
| International contractors | Samsung C&T, Hyundai E&C, China Harbour, Webuild, CCC | Strong safety culture, stricter documentation |
| Finishing subcontractors | Smaller specialist firms under the above | Where most painters actually work — check payroll reliability |
| Facility management | FM companies serving compounds, malls, hospitals, Aramco housing | Steadier hours, better accommodation, less overtime |
| Industrial contractors | Firms serving Aramco, SABIC, Ma’aden in Jubail and Yanbu | Best pay, strictest safety, shutdown work |
Where to actually look for vacancies
This is worth stating plainly, because it saves wasted effort. Saudi Arabia’s government employment platforms — Jadarat and Taqat — are for Saudi nationals only. Expatriate workers cannot use them. Qiwa is a transactions platform for contracts and transfers, not a job board.
| Channel | Useful for an expat painter? |
|---|---|
| Jadarat / Taqat | ❌ Saudi nationals only |
| Qiwa | ⚠️ For contracts and transfers, not job hunting |
| Expatriates.com | ✅ The practical board for in-country trade jobs and transfers |
| Bayt, Naukrigulf, GulfTalent, LinkedIn | ✅ Worth using, more mid-level than trade |
| Referral from colleagues | ✅ How most trade hiring actually happens |
| Direct approach to FM companies | ✅ Underused and effective |
Industries Hiring
| Industry | What they need | Pay level | Stability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Building construction | Finishing painters at volume | Medium | Project-length |
| Facility management | Maintenance painters | Medium | High |
| Oil, gas and petrochemical | Protective coating specialists | Highest | Contract and shutdown cycles |
| Hospitality | Refurbishment and touch-up teams | Medium | Steady |
| Healthcare | Hygienic and specialist coatings | Medium-high | High |
| Marine and shipyards | Hull and structure coating | High | Cyclical |
| Government and municipal | Schools, offices, public buildings | Medium | High |
The pattern worth noticing: the more technical and safety-critical the coating, the better it pays and the longer the contract. Decorative villa painting is the most competitive and lowest-paid end of the market.
Technology and Materials
Knowing the equipment and the vocabulary is a cheap way to sound experienced in an interview.
Equipment
- Airless spray units — the standard for volume work on walls and ceilings
- Conventional and HVLP guns — for joinery, doors and fine finishing
- Abrasive blasting equipment — surface preparation for steel and industrial work
- Dry film thickness gauges — used to verify a coating meets specification
- Mobile scaffold towers and boom lifts — height access on larger sites
- Dust extraction sanders — increasingly required indoors
Materials you will meet
| Type | Where it is used |
|---|---|
| Water-based emulsion | Interior walls and ceilings — the bulk of building work |
| Alkyd and enamel | Joinery, metalwork, doors |
| Epoxy systems | Floors, industrial steel, tanks |
| Polyurethane topcoats | Weather and UV resistance on exteriors and structures |
| Heat-resistant coatings | Pipework and plant in the Eastern Province |
| Texture and decorative finishes | Villas, hotels, high-end residential |
| Intumescent fire protection | Structural steel — specialist, well paid |
Intumescent coating is worth a specific mention. It is fire protection applied to structural steel, it is measured and inspected strictly, and painters who can apply it correctly are in short supply on large commercial projects.
Future Industry Trends
1. The centre of gravity has moved to Riyadh
With The Line halted and Trojena delayed, the reliable finishing work through the rest of the decade is in Riyadh — Diriyah, Expo 2030, King Salman International Airport and the metro-adjacent developments. If you are choosing where to be based, that is the honest answer for 2026 to 2030.
2. Operations work is replacing construction work at the coastal projects
Red Sea Global and Amaala are moving from building resorts to running them. That converts site painting jobs into facility maintenance jobs — fewer of them, but steadier and with better accommodation.
3. Compliance is tightening across the board
Contract documentation on Qiwa, wage protection enforcement and skill verification are all moving in the same direction: more documented, more checked. For a worker with correct paperwork this is good news, because it makes underpayment harder to sustain.
4. Specification-driven work is growing faster than decorative work
Fire protection, hygienic coatings and industrial protective systems all require painters who can follow a written specification and accept inspection. That is where the pay growth is.
What to do about it
| If you are… | Do this |
|---|---|
| A helper wanting more money | Ask to be trained on the spray gun. Nothing else moves your pay faster |
| A general painter | Target industrial coating contractors in Jubail, Yanbu or Dammam |
| Experienced and tired of camps | Move to facility management — steadier hours, better living conditions |
| Already a foreman | Pursue a coating inspection qualification |
| On the wrong iqama profession | Ask your employer to process a profession change. The fee is legally theirs |
| A Saudi national | Use Jadarat and the HRDF subsidy programmes — expats cannot compete for those |

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a painter earn in Saudi Arabia in 2026?
Advertised basic salaries run from SAR 1,200 to SAR 1,600 a month for helpers, SAR 1,600 to SAR 2,700 for skilled painters, and SAR 2,500 to SAR 4,000 for industrial coating painters. These are basic figures — accommodation, transport and overtime are usually separate. Salary websites quoting SAR 6,000 to SAR 9,000 are modelling white-collar data and do not reflect what contractors advertise.
Is there a minimum wage for painters in Saudi Arabia?
No. Saudi Arabia has no statutory minimum wage for expatriate workers. The SAR 4,000 figure often quoted online is not a minimum wage — it is the salary at which a Saudi national counts as one full employee for Saudization purposes, and it does not apply to expatriates.
Can expats still work as painters in Saudi Arabia?
Yes. Painting is not on any Saudization list. The 2026 localisation decisions target administrative, sales, marketing, engineering and tourism front-of-house roles, along with security guards and storekeepers. Manual trades including painting remain fully open to expatriate workers.
Do I need a certificate to work as a painter in Saudi Arabia?
No formal educational qualification is required. However, painting is one of the trades covered by the Skill Verification Programme, which is a practical trade test run by the Ministry of Human Resources with the TVTC. It has both a pre-arrival track and an in-country track for workers already employed in the Kingdom. Check your status at svp.qiwa.sa.
What are the working hours for painters in Saudi Arabia?
Eight hours a day and forty-eight a week, reduced to six a day and thirty-six a week during Ramadan for Muslim workers. You are entitled to a break of at least thirty minutes after a maximum of five consecutive hours, and to Friday as a paid weekly rest day. One rest day is the legal minimum — a two-day weekend is a matter of contract, not law.
Can I be made to work outdoors in the afternoon during summer?
No. Outdoor work in direct sunlight is prohibited between 12:00 and 15:00 from 15 June to 15 September across the private sector. The penalty is SAR 3,000 per worker found in breach, and it multiplies by the number of workers affected. Violations can be reported on 19911.
Who pays for my iqama as a painter?
Your employer. Under Article 40 of the Labour Law the employer bears recruitment fees, iqama issuance and renewal, work permit issuance and renewal, fines resulting from delay, profession-change fees, exit and re-entry visa fees, and your return ticket home at the end of the contract. Deductions from your wage are capped at 50%.
How do I change employer as a painter in Saudi Arabia?
With your current employer’s consent you can transfer from day one. Without consent you can normally transfer after twelve months. You can also transfer without consent at any time if you have no documented contract in Qiwa, your wages have gone unpaid for three consecutive months, your work permit was not issued within ninety days of arrival, or your permit or iqama has expired. The new employer’s company must also meet compliance thresholds. The Ministry states the transfer service is free.
What is my end of service benefit as a painter?
Half a month’s wage for each of your first five years, then one full month’s wage for each year after that, calculated on your last wage including due allowances. If you resign, you get nothing under two years, one third between two and five, two thirds between five and ten, and the full award after ten. If your employer terminates you, the full award is due regardless of length of service.
My salary has not been paid. What can I do?
Raise it internally first, then file for Friendly Settlement through the Ministry — it is free, must be filed within twelve months and runs to a twenty-one working day timetable. Since late 2025 the wage clause in a documented Qiwa contract is directly enforceable, so wages unpaid for thirty days or more can lead to funds being taken from the employer’s account without a court case. Three consecutive months of non-payment also entitles you to transfer employer without consent. The helpline is 19911, with support in English, Hindi, Urdu, Malayalam and Bengali.
Which pays more, construction painting or industrial coating?
Industrial coating, clearly. Protective coating work on steel structures, tanks and pipelines in Jubail, Yanbu and the Eastern Province pays roughly SAR 2,500 to SAR 4,000 basic against SAR 1,600 to SAR 2,700 for building finishing work. It requires surface preparation skill, the ability to work to a written specification, and stricter safety compliance.
Is NEOM still hiring painters?
Only in limited areas. Work on The Line has been halted until after 2030 and Trojena has been delayed, though Oxagon, the green hydrogen plant and the data centre projects continue. For finishing trades in 2026, Diriyah, the Expo 2030 site and King Salman International Airport in Riyadh are far more reliable sources of work.
Final Summary
Painting in Saudi Arabia pays SAR 1,600 to SAR 2,700 a month for a skilled worker on a construction site, and SAR 2,500 to SAR 4,000 for industrial coating work. Those are advertised figures, not modelled averages, and the difference between the two markets is the single biggest decision you can make about your own pay.
The trade is fully open to expatriate workers. It is not on any Saudization list, and the 2026 localisation waves have targeted office, sales and security roles rather than manual trades.
What the law gives you is not small: eight-hour days, Friday off on full pay, twenty-one days’ annual leave rising to thirty, overtime at time and a half, a protected wage payment system, employer-paid iqama costs, and an end of service payment that grows with every year you stay.
Three things worth doing this month:
- Check your Qiwa account. Confirm your contract is documented there and that the profession recorded on your iqama matches the work you actually do. Almost everything else depends on this.
- Ask to be trained on the spray gun. It is the fastest legitimate route from a general painter’s wage to a skilled painter’s wage, and it costs you nothing but the asking.
- Photograph your finished work. Clean edges, sprayed doors, completed walls. It is the cheapest possible advantage in a trade where everyone claims experience and almost nobody can show it.
Pay figures in this guide are drawn from advertised vacancies and are basic salaries unless stated otherwise. Legal provisions reflect the Saudi Labour Law including the February 2025 amendments, and Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development rules current in 2026.
